Academic credit
Academic credit (1 ECTS = 27 h) is a measure of learning. Collection of approximately 60 credits per academic year you keep yourself, FPA, and school satisfaction.
Academical quarter
Academic quarter is historically followed practice in universities were lectures start at fifteen minutes past the hour. Academic quarter is also a running event, which will be held in 2010 up to the sixtieth time.
Active
All members who are involved in the council of representatives, the board, local units or are in other ways a part of LAUREAMKOs activities are called actives.
Alumni
Alumnilla usually refers to a graduated university students. Alumni activities means activities held for and by such people. Alumni activity may aim at maintaining the connection for example the educational institution and its former pupils or creating links between the alumni. Laurea Alumni Association was founded in cooperation with Laurea and LAUREAMKO for Laurea graduates. Its purpose is to support the graduates and strengthen cooperation and networking and to develop and improve the functioning of Laurea Laurea graduates in the labor market awareness.
Anniversary event
LAUREAMKOs anniversity event is a festive tradition that is open to old, new and already graduated students. Laureas staff, students from different student unions, organizations, and representatives of working life are also welcome.
Appro
In teh commong tongue "appro" is the lowest matriculation examination approved by the University and a Master's thesis grade.
Higher education figures are cum laude approbatur and laudatur.
Events which rotate bars and campus locals where you have to collect stamps by drinking are also called appro (a.ka bar crawl).
A certain amount of stamp will earn you a sertain appro or a degree.
Bulletin
LAUREAMKOs bulletin that contains information about topical issues is released every other week.
The bulletin is published on paper and you can find it on bulletin boards in each Laurea's units and as well as a electronic format by e-mail, website and facebook.
Career and recruitment day
Event arranged 1-2 times a year by LAUREAMKO in which it is possible to conclude work contacts and access to trade unions.
Council of Representatives
LAUREAMKOs highest decision making section consisting of 15 members. Council of Representatives are elected annually in the autumn elections. Any LAUREAMKOs member can stand for election.
Cultural events
LAUREAMKO organize a student-friendly opportunities to dive into culture: musicals, museums, ballet, etc.

Excursio
Excursion or "excu" is a trip where you get to a specific location and/or event.
Freshman
Freshmen are first year students.
Freshmen's event
Event for Laurea's new students. It's the mindblowing adventure day in Helsinki where all new students compeat for the lordship of the freshmen. The point is to raise the spirits, have fun together and get to know new people. In the afterparty all new students will rock the house and party till 4 am.
FUAS
Laurea is part of a large metropolitan area strategic alliance, which includes HAMK and LAMK (previosly also Metropolia). FUAS is an acronym for Four Universities of Applied Sciences.
FUASKO
A form of FUAS-polytechnic student unions cooperation. The cooperation is with HAMKO, LAMKO and METKA in a range of matters.
Halloped
Halloped is a student representative in Laureas government . A position of trust.
Hang out evening
non-alcoholic events arranged by student unions and in which for example one can play board games. Trade Mark by Nyyti Association.
HOAS
Helsinki Region Student Housing, which has been established to facilitate the students' housing situation in the metropolitan area.
HOTRA
Short for the hotel and restaurant management training program.
Kopo
Short for educational polics (koulutuspolitiikka in finnish). The student unions educational policy focuses on the amount of teaching, workload, credits equivalence, exams repair time validity and other studies issues related to studies. The student union also deals in education policy at the national level and seeks to influence legislation in the Universitys of Applied Sciences, the structural development, education, payments, etc.
Laurea FACTS
Laurea Facts is an annual publication, Guide to Laurea's students and staff. It brings together a Laurea University of Applied Sciences in general and related material and practical guidance. The Fact shows for example what is the Optima, WinhaWille, SoleOPS or general exam day.
LAUREAMKO
The student union of Laurea whose primary function is to monitor students' interests.
LAUREAMKO's local actors
Each of the seven local units of Laurea operates LAUREAMKOs local branch. Local actors primary task is protection of interest in their espesific location. In addition they organize events and other fun within their own unit.
LIKO
Short for Business Administration degree.
LOB
A Boat cruise for students of Laurea organized by Poikkitieteellinen pursiseura. LAUREAMKO helps and takes part in organizing the cruise.
Nyyti
Nyyti ry is a student support center, whose purpose is to encourage and support students' emotional well-being and coping ability and influence the issues. Services will be developed in such a way that they contribute to psychological well-being and mental health and prevent illness. For example hangout evening and virtual shoulder.
Offices
There is LAUREAMKOs office in each Laurea's units . LAUREAMKOs central office is located in Tikkurila's: Ratatie 22, 01300 Vantaa. The central office is open daily on weekdays.
On the road
LAUREAMKOs board visit all the different locations at the beginning of each semester. On the road you can meet the people from the board, discuss with them about issues conserting your unit, studying at Laurea and about LAUREAMKOs activities. During the OTR you can also buy a student card or a new sticker for it and other LAUREAMKOs sales articles.
Open University of Applied Sciences
Open University of Applied Sciences studies is open to everyone without age or educational requirements. Teaching Supply-degree training programs consist of courses in accordance with the exception of a placement and theses.
OPM
OPM is the abbreviation of the Ministry of Education and also means "bring your own bottle" or BYOB in finnish
Opponing
Opponing means to read thu another student's work (eg dissertation or thesis) and to focus on the content, structure, language, etc., in a positive spirit. Opponent is not intended to criticize the work, but to look for different ways to deal with the matter and present a continuing and repair proposals.

Overalls
Student overall garment is mainly used for student parties. Overalls are typically used by university and polytechnics students. The overalls are usually the easyest garment for various student events. LAUREAMKOs overalls are coloring lilacs and you can buy them from LAUREAMKOs offices. Overall badges are often collected from of student events and traded by students. Coloring and the symbol on the back is the ID of the colleg or university where the person studies. In some student circles, it is customary to exchange part of the overalls sleeve with dating partner.

LAUREAMKOs has its own overall badges and different sectors of education has its own brands. All these badges can be purchased LAUREAMKOs offices.
Protection of interests
Protection of interest includes the LAUREAMKO's student assignments which contribute to the university or the society on behalf of the improvement of students' affairs.
PALJO
Short for service management training program.
Poikkitieteellinen Pursiseura
An association set up by Laurea's students which organizes the annual cruise LOB. LAUREAMKO will cooperate closely with the association.
SAMOK
Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences - SAMOK is a national interest and service organization independently administered by students in universities of applied sciences. SAMOK's members consist of 27 student unions as well as SKOL, TERHOL and STOL. The Association was founded in 1996.
Sitsit
Sitsi has a background in academic banquet table events where the purpose is to eat, sing drinking songs, give speeches and in some cases also other kinds of program program. Holding Sits or sitsing is mainly done by university students. The event usually has a reason or theme.
Sopo
Sopo is abbreviation of social policy (sosiaalipolitiikka in finnish). LAUREAMKO's social policy focuses on improving livelihoods, housing, health care, transportation and takes care of holding sports services to students.

Specilization courses
Specilization courses are occupational and continuing training courses, which are usually carried out by already graduate persons who wish to further deepen their skills.
Sport courses
LAUREAMKOs organizes student-priced sports event in Laureas premises. The courses varies each semester, for example from zumba to yoga.
Student card
Student Card is a sign of the student union membership. It is possible for LAUREAMKOs members to obtain either SAMOK or Lyyra student card.
Student card sticker
The student card is not valid without a sticker for a semester or academic year. Stickers may be purchased from LAUREAMKOs offices.
SYL
Finnish Union of University Students, which includes all Finnish university students through its student union.
The board
A group of students elected by LAUREAMKOs Council of Representatives. The Board monitor students' interests, organizes events and aims to make studying a bit more fun. They bring light event to the darkest of days :)

University of Applied Sciences final test and work that contains research.
TIKO
Abbreviation of Business Information Technology degree.
Tournament
LAUREAMKO organizes e.g soccer and floorball tournaments each year. Any student or staff member may set up a team and take part in the games in a good atmosphere.
Turva
Abbreviation for security training program.
Tutor
A person who can be recognizes from a tutor-shirt. Tutors are trained by LAUREAMKO and they live to help, support and have fun with new students. Student tutors work in conjunction with tutor teachers. Tutors generally move in a herd.
Varjot
An active day arranged by tutors and LAUREAMKOs local actors which is meant to raise their own class and the unit's co-spirit up to the ceiling before the actual freshmens event.

YAMK
Masters degree programs which at Laurea are offered in both Finnish and English. In general, you can apply for the upper Bachelor's degree program if you have already completed the basic degree or other relevant degree. In addition, the applicant must have at least three years relevant work experience.
